So you bought a boat, now what?
Every boat needs to be registered and there are two ways to do so. Either State Title or Document with the US Coast Guard. A vessel of five net tons (25 feet or more) owned by a US citizen or owned by a business that is 75% US owned for pleasure is eligible for Documentation. Some advantages for documenting your boat are:
You may be able to save on taxes depending on what state you are in. Click here to see your state registration and tax laws.
No tacky number stickers on the hull anymore.
Your certificate of documentation allows you to travel to foreign waters and gives clearance with foreign governments and provides certain protection by the US flag.
It is easier to get a bank loan or to refinance when the boat is US Coast Guard Documented. Click here for more info on getting a First Preferred Ship Mortgage.
